A Historic Event for Asian Pacific American Communities: 2005 Virginia Asia Pacific Americans CANDIDATES´ FORUM

Russell Potts, candidate for Virginia´s Governor, Leslie Byrne, candidate for Lieutenant Governor, and candidates for state Delegate offices, are participating in a historic Asian Pacific Candidates´ Forum on September 10 in Vienna, Virginia.

An alliance of 16 non-partisan Asian Pacific American (APA) organizations, including the Washington Chapter of the National Association of Korean Americans (NAKA), will hold an all APA-sponsored 2005 Candidates´ Forum on September 10, 2005 from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Korean Central Presbyterian Church at 8526 Amanda Place, Vienna, Virginia.

The APA communities have many concerns. In a May 15, 2004 Arlington Public Forum, APA witnesses testified about the lack of APA representation in Virginia´s education system, lack of health care for many APA residents, lack of APA representation in state government, and lack of equal protection for APAs under state law at a time when the state legislature seems intent on reducing English-limited citizens?rights to state services.

"There are 300,000 to 360,000 APA residents in Virginia, and 22,500 APA-owned firms that generate $4.4 billion in gross revenues and provide 47,000 jobs. Yet 14% of our APA families live in poverty and are not getting the services they need," said Eric Jensen, Chairman of the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans of Virginia.

A reception to allow attendees to meet with the candidates will be held from 5:00-6:30 p.m. following the event. For directions to the Church, go to: http://www.kcpc.org/churchinfo/map.asp.
